Newyorkland
by Temporary Distortion (New York)
World Premiere!
Nov 9 – 12, 2011
Newyorkland is the latest work by the New York based theatre company Temporary Distortion, who, since 2002, have developed their own unique brand of contemporary performance that bridges the gap between theatre and cinema. With Newyorkland, the company has set its sights on cinema’s dark and gritty depictions of street cops. Following the intertwining lives of four New York City cops struggling with the demands of their chosen profession, Newyorkland sheds light on the high costs of membership in a secretive, fraternal society and the thin line between righteousness and corruption.
Mind-blowing video images and theatrical tension, a nightmarish pop aesthetic that deserves your attention.
The New York Times
Temporary Distortion is part of a new wave of dynamic, young, American theatre artists who are challenging the traditional expectations of the stage with idiosyncratic Western sensibilities. Reviving the vitality of the theatre in a contemporary world, their work features a fusion of live performance, cinema, and visual art, staging unsettling, meditative theatre in claustrophobic, boxlike structures that feature minimal physical movement and a uniquely restrained acting style.
In the work, projected video is juxtaposed with live performance to create dreamlike double worlds that fracture traditional notions of narrative coherence. In these four– dimensional theatrical installations, the performers never make eye contact, never touch and barely move. Meanwhile, a journey on film unfolds in a hyperreal world around them.
Theatre Junction is proud to present the world premiere of Newyorkland in Calgary!
Intimate theatre for our time.
