We’re Gonna Die
By Young Jean Lee (New York)
Canadian Premiere!
May 2 – 5, 2012
With her band Future Wife, experimental American–Korean playwright Young Jean Lee takes the stage in a life–affirming show, about the thing everyone has in common: we’re gonna die. Described as a sort of existential cabaret, part pop concert and part autobiographical lament, Lee tells stories and sings songs about our shared human weakness, sadness, loss, ageing and the public masks we wear to hide it all. What Lee ultimately argues is that these masks we bear to conceal the true depth of our sadness keep us in isolation when we are most in need of comfort.
We’re Gonna Die is an invitation to remove those masks—we may be miserable, but we don’t have to be alone. Her band Future Wife was originally formed as an experiment after an invitation from Lou Reed to play a show at John Zorn’s New York club, The Stone. We’re Gonna Die is an evening of transcendental story-telling and raw human interaction at its most truthful —and Lou Reed loved it!

The clearest indication that the avant–garde isn’t dead, and has never been funnier.

Young Jean Lee’s Theatre Company is an Obie award–winning New York-based company that has been creating and presenting experimental theatre written and directed by Young Jean Lee since 2003. Performing their work both in their hometown of New York, and on international stages around the world, they have actively set about changing the artistically conservative, predominately–white–and–middle–class face of New York theatre, one sold–out show at a time. They are committed to creating work that deals with major issues in unpredictable and complicated ways that stick in people’s minds and challenge them to think rather than reaffirming their pre–existing beliefs. A recipient of the 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship and named one of the ‘top 25 artists who will change the face of American theatre’ by American Theatre Magazine, Young Jean Lee represents the future of contemporary theatre.
Lee confirms herself as one of the best experimental playwrights in America.
