Karl Nimeni is Coming

What inspired you to create the Dancing Monkey Laboratory? What’s your favourite thing about Calgary? These are just two of the questions we asked the Dancing Monkeys, which is our sixth group to perform in the program NEXT STAGE, with an amazing multidisciplinary work. What inspired you to create Dancing Monkey Laboratories? Dancing Monkey Laboratories began in Montreal in 2009 when Mike Czuba and Larry Lamont needed a company to produce Mike’s play I AM I (now published). The Laboratory travelled to Calgary with Mike the following year and in 2011, in a fit of creative desire, he convinced Melissa to join the collective. They began exploring what a shared interdisciplinary practice could look like and SATELLITES was born. In 2012, they convinced Nate to join the team...

Puppets, Paper & Pizza

What inspires local artists? What are their secret indulgences? These are just two of the questions we asked Pape & Taper Productions, who are our second group to perform in the program NEXT STAGE, with a satirical and macabre style puppet show in the Studio. Describe your Performance  Timmy and Tommy are two ordinary kids from un-extraordinary town who find themselves thrown into the mysterious world of the haunted Barrington Hotel when a game of catch goes wrong. Original songs, puppetry, ghosts and a surprisingly helpful bellhop guide Timmy and Tommy through the complexities of life, death and grief. Originally premiering at the 2017 International Festival of Animated Objects, Timmy, Tommy & the Haunted Hotel also appeared in the Edmonton and Regina Fringe Festivals. The whole team is thrilled...

A Paper Covered World

What inspires local artists? What are their secret indulgences? These are just two of the questions we asked Kyra and Quinn, who will be kicking off our new program NEXT STAGE, with an incredible dance piece in the Studio. Describe your Performance  We are using dance as a medium to explore social topics, which is new for us.  In the past, we’ve primarily focused on movement creation rather than storytelling or sending a message.  Though we are still keeping the piece light and quirky and true to ourselves. We are using a series of boxes and paper to explore how our environment shapes us and encourages us to conform, which can ultimately lead to the demise of our creative selves (if we let it). We incorporate...
