Back to Back Theatre
Presented by Theatre Junction (Australia) Canadian Première!
May 22nd – 25th, 2013 8pm
Using a cast of mixed abilities, Ganesh Versus the Third Reich follows two simultaneous stories; it is a play about the Hindu god Ganesh, sent to earth in 1943 on a quest to reclaim the swastika from Hitler, as well as a story of the group of disabled people who are making the play. The actors perform both as themselves and as the characters in the ‘play within a play’, effectively convincing the audience that this work is being made, in each moment, before our eyes. Back to Back Theatre has developed an international reputation for its unique ability to present the issues of our times with a distinct outsider focus. As an ensemble made up of performers perceived to have intellectual disabilities, they are a collective who, in a culture obsessed with perfection and surgically enhanced ‘beauty’, are the real outsiders; asking us what the fixation with economic rationality and utilitarianism means for people excluded from the ‘norm’.
