Adapted for the stage by the captivating hand of director Guy Cassiers, Sunken Red is a lamentation for a deceased mother and a recollection of the Japanese prison camps of WWII. Memories are explored through soul-baring soliloquy and live-feed video projections, illuminating how horrors experience as a child can be stored deep within only to be tragically re-created in adulthood. In this lucid, anti-sentimental but poetical work, Cassiers and actor Dirk Roofthooft create an ambiguous character fraught with inner conflict, a self-portrait of a person on the verge of falling apart.
