THEATRE JUNCTION’S 2014.15 SEASON – THEATRE/MUSIC/VIDEO

SOCIAL FICTION –  PIPS:lab (Amsterdam)

Presented by Theatre Junction

November 19th to 22nd, 2014
All  performances begin @ 8 pm

Every day, social media asks us to provide a lot of private information. And, we give it. We give everything. Because through these services we connect and share in a way that has never before been possible. But does this mean that in the future all social interactions will be perceived as fiction simply because they are remote and online? It is this not-so-distant world that Social Fiction, the newest creation of interactive media/performance pioneers PIPS:lab explore the phenomenon of social media, where a social life may now consist of browsing the web, preferably without personal commitment.

…Raw, expressive, visually stunning and interactive multimedia performances…PIPS:lab [sweeps] the crowd off their feet.”
– TEDx AMSTERDAM

THEATRE JUNCTION’S 2014.15 SEASON – THEATRE

UNTITLED FEMINIST SHOW –  Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company (New York)

Presented by Theatre Junction
and
One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre – Part of the 20th annual High Performance Rodeo, Calgary International Festival of the Arts

January 15th to 18th, 2015
All evening performances begin @ 8 pm
Sunday’s matinee begins @ 2 pm

An exquisitely flamboyant illustration of the performance of gender which we all negotiate every moment of every day. Young Jean Lee’s Untitled Feminist Show is a visceral exploration of varying feminist paradigms. Six charismatic stars of the downtown New York theatre, dance, cabaret and burlesque worlds come together in a blend of comic vignettes, contemporary dance sequences and evocative video images. With an absence of words (and clothes) the performers enact and subvert every stereotype, caricature, archetype ad construction of women that both reveal and challenge the viewers’ assumptions about gender politics.

“…One of the more moving and imaginative works I have ever seen on the American stage…Lee’s universe is so emotionally complete that I yearned to be part of her utopia.”  THE NEW YORKER

THEATRE JUNCTION’S 2014.15 SEASON – THEATRE/DANCE/VIDEO/MUSIC

EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE – Mark Lawes and Theatre Junction’s Company of Artists (Calgary)

Produced and Presented by Theatre Junction

February 27th to March 5th, 2015
All performances begin @ 8 pm

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is the second chapter in the Supernova saga, a research on the notion of identity and territory. In this multi-disciplinary creation that skirts the boundaries of live performance, mixing pop-music, theatre, video-art and new technologies, Lawes asks us to question ‘what is this place’, or more precisely, ‘what is this non-place’ that we are searching for? The real, the imaginary and the virtual cross to create new identities that traverse unknown territories. These neo-nomads, a hyper-mobile clan, leave the city behind and wander into unknown territory in search of a new home.

[Lawe's works are a] vibrant, surreal and often quite funny combination of spoken word, dance, striking video, film sequences and haunting original music…sexy, smart, playful.” – THE CALGARY HERALD

THEATRE JUNCTION’S 2014.15 SEASON – PUPPET THEATRE

FAMOUS PUPPET DEATH SCENES – Old Trout Puppet Workshop (Calgary)

Produced by Theatre Junction and Old Trout Puppet Workshop
Presented by Theatre Junction and
The International Festival of Animated Objects

March 13th to March 28th, 2015
All evening performances begin @ 8 pm
Saturday matinee begins @ 2 pm

Why do we die? Is it necessary? What is eternity? Beneath the amusing antics of Famous Puppet Death Scenes churns a mature existentialism. Calgary’s own Old Trout Puppet Workshop promises to cure your fear of death – no more anxiety about difficult choices, no more dreading birthdays, no more desperate pleas for immortality through fame, art, or progeny. Through a collection of death scenes culled from a (fictional) cannon of famous puppet shows throughout history, The Old Trouts have created a snapshot of multiple stories that have the effect of viewing a painting in a gallery or finding an old photograph – the imagination of the audience is left to fill in the gaps.

“...hilarious, beautiful and macabre…simply remarkable…too intense to allow its audience to catch its breath, too beautiful for them to want to.” – FFWD

SHANE KOYCZAN

Award-winning Canadian poet, author and performer

Presented by Tooth Blackner Presents

The world took notice of Shane Koyczan when his influential, anti-bullying, To This Day Project video went viral in early 2013 and has reached over 14 million views and counting.

Powerfully engaging and authentic in attitude, Shane’s explorations are relevant to our times in the way that Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen were to theirs. But unlike the musicians that he’s often compared to, poets rarely infiltrate pop culture.  Shane emerges in a new wave of 21st century poetry that dares to belong to the people and speak directly to them in their own voice.

Shane is both a writer and spoken word virtuoso. His first published collection, Visiting Hours, was the only work of poetry selected by both the Guardian and the Globe and Mail for their Best Books of the Year lists in 2005. Destined to become a future classic, Visiting Hours is now in its third edition, and includes We Are More, performed by Shane at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics.
