Soundings

A pioneering program to bring the general public in from the sidelines.

Highly inclusive and more participatory conversation than consultation, Soundings will be open-space gatherings facilitated by leading process designers to effectively harness the collective wisdom and self-organizing capacity of groups of any size.

Sounding

(verb) : the bringing together of a community to listen and learn from each other in order to influence change.

Art workers across all disciplines in Calgary are coming together to speak their minds

Hosted by Springboard Performance, Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre and Theatre Junction GRAND, don’t miss the second Sounding event.

Speak your Mind:

  • Is there enough opportunity for everyone?
  • How do we work better together?
  • What are the conversations we aren’t having?

What you can Expect:

  • An open format for the day.
  • To set your own agenda.
  • To connect with others.
  • To explore possible approaches.
  • To take responsibility for the things you actually want and care about.

We invite you to our second Sounding.

The first Sounding brought together 80 emerging artists. The focus of that Sounding was to begin to look at the root causes as to why so many emerging artists elect to move elsewhere rather than stay in Calgary. This session provided us with great feedback and now we would like to hear from you!

Date: June 26, 2017 1:00pm – 5:00pm
Location: Theatre Junction GRAND (608 1st St. SW)

Emerging Artist Sounding

January 14th, 2017

Artists came together to discuss how to live a creative life in Calgary

Eighty artists from a multitude of disciplines gathered in January to discuss their future as artists in Calgary and how they could live a creative life in the city. The day was set up in an open style to facilitate a number of conversations created by, and discussed by, the artists. The belief is that the people who were in the room were the people who needed to be in the room and their interests would determine those conversations.

Discussions ranged from how to increase multi-disciplinary collaboration to finding both physical and non-physical space to funding challenges and unpaid work. One of the biggest themes that came from the day was the need for community and a drive to work together to make positive changes in Calgary. A few initiatives have already begun with plans for more to follow. As always, resources and support to realize these plans are necessary but there is much that can be done by artists to get things started.
